32 Miscellaneous Jokes: The 1998 “Search & Space-Rock” Edition

In 1998, the internet got a brain, the desktop got some color, and Hollywood decided that the only way to save Earth from a giant asteroid was to send Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck into space. It was the year we stopped “Asking Jeeves” and started “Googling,” while we all collectively tried to figure out why a digital hamster-owl hybrid was screaming “Me hungry!” from the bottom of our toy chests at 2 AM.

The 1998 Top 10: The “Google & iMac” Classics

  1. The Launch of Google Inc.: Why did the garage door open? Because Larry and Sergey realized that a clean white page and a search bar were more powerful than every “Portal” in existence. Suddenly, we didn’t have to remember anything ever again.
  2. The iMac G3 Debut: Why was the computer blue and see-through? Because Steve Jobs decided that the future shouldn’t look like a beige filing cabinet. It was the first time we bought a PC because it looked like a giant pieces of candy.
  3. Furby Fever: Why were we terrified of a toy? Because in 1998, we bought a robotic creature that spoke “Furbish,” learned English, and allegedly worked for the NSA—all while refusing to ever shut its eyes.
  4. Armageddon vs. Deep Impact: Why was 1998 the year of the rock? Because Hollywood was convinced that a giant asteroid was definitely going to hit us, and our only hope was either a group of oil drillers or a very somber Morgan Freeman.
  5. The Viagra Launch: Why was everyone smiling? Because Pfizer released a little blue pill that changed the pharmaceutical industry and made late-night commercial breaks very awkward for families everywhere.
  6. Titanic’s Oscar Sweep: Why did we need a bigger trophy shelf? Because James Cameron won 11 Oscars and shouted “I’m the king of the world!”—finally giving everyone permission to stop crying and start buying the VHS.
  7. The Game Boy Color: Why was everything so bright? Because Nintendo finally realized that 1998 was too vibrant for a pea-green screen, giving Pokémon fans the chance to see Pikachu in his full yellow glory.
  8. The Britney Spears Debut: Why was the school hallway so iconic? Because “…Baby One More Time” hit the airwaves, and suddenly the 90s went from “grunge” to “pop” faster than you could say “Hit me baby.”
  9. Windows 98 Launch: Why did it crash during the demo? Because Bill Gates wanted to show us that even the “World’s Most Advanced OS” had a sense of humor and a deep love for the Blue Screen of Death.
  10. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Why was everyone playing the flute? Because Nintendo 64 gave us a masterpiece that proved video games were art—and that we would spend 40 hours just trying to get a horse to jump a fence.

The Full 1998 Miscellaneous Jokes Archive

  3. Starcraft: Why was everyone “Zerg rushing”? Because Blizzard turned PC strategy into an obsession, and we all learned that “Nuclear Launch Detected” is the scariest sentence in the English language.
  4. Saving Private Ryan: Why were the first 20 minutes so quiet in the theater? Because Spielberg made a movie so real that every other action film suddenly looked like a Saturday morning cartoon.
  5. The Big Lebowski: Why did we start liking rugs? Because The Dude showed us that “abiding” is a full-time job and that a White Russian is the only proper way to handle a kidnapping.
  6. Half-Life: Why did the scientist have a crowbar? Because Gordon Freeman proved that you don’t need to speak to save the world from aliens—you just need a degree in theoretical physics and a really good swing.
  7. Seinfeld Finale: Why was the jail cell so crowded? Because 76 million people watched the “Show About Nothing” end with the main characters behind bars, leaving us all wondering who we were supposed to quote at work now.
  8. The Portable DVD Player: Why did it cost $1,000? Because the ability to watch The Matrix on a 5-inch screen in a car was a luxury reserved for the 1% and very tech-savvy toddlers.
  9. Sex and the City: Why were we talking about “Cosmos”? Because HBO taught us that four women in New York could spend an entire episode talking about shoes and dating, and we’d watch every second of it.
  10. Metal Gear Solid: Why was the box moving? Because Hideo Kojima taught us that “stealth” meant hiding under cardboard and that a boss could read your memory card to tell you what other games you liked.

  16. DMX – It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot: Why was there so much barking? Because DMX brought the raw energy back to hip-hop, proving that you could reach #1 by being the loudest person in the room.
  17. The “Dancing Baby” (Oogachaka): Why was a CGI infant on our screens? Because Ally McBeal made a low-res rendering of a dancing baby the first “viral meme” before we even had a word for it.
  18. Banjo-Kazooie: Why was there a bird in the backpack? Because 1998 was the year of “collect-a-thons,” where we spent hours looking for jigsaw pieces and musical notes in a colorful fever dream.
  19. The Launch of the ISS: Why were we building a house in space? Because the International Space Station started its assembly, giving us a place to live in orbit—mostly so we could have a better view of the asteroids from earlier.

  21. The Sega Dreamcast (Japan Launch): Why did the controller have a screen? Because Sega lived in the year 3000, even if the rest of us were still trying to figure out how to use a mouse.
  22. The “Whatever” Decade: Why was apathy still cool? Because even as the world prepared for the “Y2K bug,” we all just shrugged, put on our cargo pants, and kept downloading music on Napster’s precursors.
