61 Observational One-Liners: The 1990 Reality Patch

1990: The Analog-Digital Handover.
We are entering a decade where the Internet is still just a “cool idea” in a Swiss lab, cellular phones are the size of a loaf of bread, and the only way to avoid a conversation is to pretend you aren’t home—because your phone is literally bolted to the kitchen wall. This is the era of the flashing “12:00” on VCRs and the birth of the “Whatever” generation.

The 1990 Top 10: Golden Classics

  1. My VCR has been blinking “12:00” for three months; I’ve decided to just treat it as a strobe light for a very slow-motion party.
  2. I spent four hours at the mall today. I didn’t buy anything, but I ate enough free samples at the food court to constitute a legal marriage to a Bourbon Chicken skewer.
  3. Payphones are the ultimate social gamble: you’re basically touching a public surface and hoping the person on the other end is actually home.
  4. “Home Alone” taught me two things: Joe Pesci is terrifying, and my parents would definitely forget me if a trip to Paris was on the line.
  5. My computer has 640KB of RAM. Bill Gates said I’d never need more, and I believe him—who could possibly have that many thoughts?
  6. The “World Wide Web” sounds like something a giant spider invented to catch nerds.
  7. Nothing says “I’m a serious professional” like a pager clipped to your belt that only goes off when your mom needs you to buy milk.
  8. If you want to break up with someone in 1990, you have to leave a message on their cassette tape and wait three days for the inevitable “beep.”
  9. MC Hammer says “U Can’t Touch This,” which is also exactly what my bank account says two days after payday.
  10. I tried to do a “New Kids on the Block” dance move and ended up in the ER; apparently, my “Right Stuff” is actually “Slight Scoliosis.”

  17. Why don’t scientists trust atoms? Because they make up everything.
