33 Miscellaneous Jokes: The 2005 “Broadcast Yourself & High-Def” Edition

In 2005, the internet finally got its voice—and its eyes. It was the year we stopped just reading the web and started watching it, thanks to three guys who just wanted to share some videos from a dinner party. We witnessed the tragic transformation of Anakin Skywalker, tried to survive the “Ring of Death” on our brand-new white consoles, and realized that “The Office” was actually funny even without the British accents. It was a year of transitions, where the “Old Web” started to look very blurry compared to the high-definition future that was just clicking into place.

The 2005 Top 10: The “YouTube & Must-Far” Classics

  1. The Launch of YouTube: Why did the first video feature a guy at the zoo? Because Jawed Karim didn’t realize that “Me at the zoo” was the first brick in a digital empire that would eventually be 90% influencers saying “Don’t forget to like and subscribe!”
  2. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith: Why did it get so hot? Because George Lucas finally gave us the lava duel we wanted, proving that “having the high ground” is the ultimate tactical advantage in any friendship.
  3. The Launch of Xbox 360: Why was there a green ring of light? Because Microsoft gave us “Next-Gen” graphics, but also a 33% chance that our console would turn into a very expensive, glowing paperweight by next Tuesday.
  4. The Launch of Google Maps: Why did we throw away our paper atlases? Because Google gave us a way to see our own roof from space and finally answered the question: “How exactly do I get to that Taco Bell without getting lost?”
  5. The Office (US) Debut: Why was Steve Carell so awkward? Because 2005 was the year we realized that a paper company in Scranton was the perfect place to witness the slow-motion car crash of a manager trying to be “cool.”
  6. The Launch of Reddit: Why was it just a list of blue links? Because Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian decided that the “front page of the internet” should be a place where strangers vote on things, starting a 20-year argument that never ends.
  7. Batman Begins: Why was it so dark? Because Christopher Nolan decided that Batman shouldn’t be “neon,” he should be “traumatized,” officially starting the era of the gritty reboot.
  8. The Guitar Hero Launch: Why were we playing plastic toys? Because 2005 convinced us that pressing five colored buttons on a fake Gibson was way more “rock and roll” than actually learning a real instrument.
  9. The Launch of the iPod Nano: Why was it in Steve Jobs’ coin pocket? Because Apple decided that the Mini was too big, and we needed a device so thin it could accidentally be lost in a sandwich.
  10. Brokeback Mountain: Why was everyone talking about cowboys? Because 19 years ago, Hollywood finally realized that “I wish I knew how to quit you” was the most heartbreaking line in cinema history.

The Full 2005 Miscellaneous Jokes Archive

  1. How I Met Your Mother: Why did it take nine years? Because 2005 was the start of the longest “story” in TV history, where a yellow umbrella and a “suit up” became our entire personality.
  2. The Launch of Google Earth: Why were we “flying” over the planet? Because we spent hours zooming into Area 51 and our ex’s backyard just because we could.
  3. Wedding Crashers: Why were we “locking it up”? Because Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson taught us that free crab cakes and bridesmaids are the only reasons to attend a stranger’s wedding.
  4. The Launch of the “Nunchuk”: Why was the Wii controller leaking? Because Nintendo showed us a “Revolution” controller that looked like a TV remote, and we all wondered if we were supposed to play games or change the channel.
  5. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Why was there so much hair? Because in 2005, the stylists decided that every male student at Hogwarts should look like they hadn’t seen a barber since 1994.
  6. The Launch of Pandora Radio: Why was it “The Music Genome Project”? Because it was the first time an algorithm told us, “If you like Nickelback, you might also like… professional help.”
  7. Madagascar: Why were we “moving it, moving it”? Because Sacha Baron Cohen as a lemur king was the energy we didn’t know we needed in 2005.
  8. The Launch of TeamSpeak 2: Why were we yelling at our clans? Because before Discord, we had a gray box that let us coordinate our World of Warcraft raids while sounding like we were talking through a toaster.
  9. Mr. & Mrs. Smith: Why was the chemistry so real? Because Brad and Angelina made “marriage counseling” involve high-caliber weapons and the start of a decade of tabloid covers.
  10. The Launch of the “Million Dollar Homepage”: Why was one pixel a dollar? Because a student realized that people would pay for anything in 2005, as long as it looked like a digital billboard for gambling sites.
  11. King Kong: Why was the ape so big? Because Peter Jackson finished Lord of the Rings and decided he wasn’t done making Andy Serkis crawl around on all fours in front of a green screen.
  12. The Launch of MySpace Music: Why was the profile song so loud? Because you hadn’t truly lived until you were jumpscared by a 14-year-old’s “Fall Out Boy” autoplay at 1 AM.
  13. The 40-Year-Old Virgin: Why was he waxing his chest? Because Steve Carell proved that “Kelly Clarkson!” is a perfectly valid thing to shout when you’re in extreme physical pain.
  14. The Launch of the PSP (US): Why did we want a “Walkman for the 21st century”? Because Sony gave us movies on tiny UMD discs that made a weird whirring sound and a screen that was a fingerprint magnet.
  15. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Why was Johnny Depp so pale? Because Tim Burton decided that Willy Wonka should look like a very concerned dentist who had never seen the sun.
  16. The Launch of Etsy: Why were we buying handmade soap? Because someone realized the internet needed a place for people to sell their “unique” crafts that weren’t quite good enough for a real store.
  17. Sin City: Why was it black and white? Because 2005 was the year of “digital style,” and we all wanted to look like we walked out of a comic book and into a rainy alleyway.
  18. The Launch of the “Video iPod”: Why were we watching Lost on a 2-inch screen? Because the future was here, even if it meant squinting so hard we got a headache just to see the polar bear.
  19. Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin Down”: Why was it a “swing”? Because Pete Wentz and his eyeliner taught us that singing words no one can understand is the key to a pop-punk masterpiece.
  20. The Launch of Cyber Monday: Why were we shopping on a Monday? Because the retail industry realized that everyone used their fast office internet to buy gifts they couldn’t load on their home dial-up.
  21. War of the Worlds: Why were the tripods so loud? Because Tom Cruise running away from giant machines was the most “2005” thing possible, especially if you ignore the “couch-jumping” incident.
  22. The Launch of Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD: Why were we fighting again? Because the “Format War” started, and we all had to guess which silver disc would win before we spent $500 on a player.
  23. New Year’s Eve 2005: Why were we so hyped for 2006? Because we finally had YouTube, we had 360-degree graphics, and we were pretty sure that this “internet” thing was finally going to be something big.
