Step into 2004 – the year when the Nintendo DS changed how we played, Gmail launched (on April Fools’ Day!), and the Motorola Razr V3 became the only fashion accessory that mattered. It was the era of LiveStrong yellow wristbands on every arm and the summer of the “Green Day” resurgence. From the end of Friends to the debut of Lost, here is the observational archive of 2004.
The 2004 Top 10: Golden Classics
- The Mean Girls Doctrine: I now know that “fetch” is never going to happen, and I’m terrified of what might be written about me in a Burn Book.
- The Super Bowl Wardrobe Malfunction: One second of television changed the entire internet and gave birth to the “YouTube” idea because we all just wanted to see that clip again.
- The Gmail Invitation: I’ve been begging strangers on forums for a Gmail invite like it’s a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s factory. Who knew 1GB of storage would be the ultimate status symbol?
- The LiveStrong Loop: My left arm is currently 20% yellow silicone. I’m not sure what I’m supporting anymore, but I know I can’t take this bracelet off without losing my social standing.
- The Facebook Launch: There’s a website called “TheFacebook,” but it’s only for Ivy League kids. I’m currently looking for a fake Harvard ID just so I can upload a blurry profile picture.
- The Lost Island Mystery: I just watched a plane crash and a polar bear in a jungle. I’m sure all these mysteries will be perfectly explained in a satisfying way by the end of the season.
- The Motorola Razr V3: It’s thin, it’s metallic, and it makes the most satisfying “clap” sound when you hang up on someone. I feel like a secret agent from the future.
- The Napoleon Dynamite Vibe: I’ve spent the whole week practicing my “tetherball” skills and asking people if they want to see my “ligers.”
- The Shrek 2 “Holding Out for a Hero”: Jennifer Saunders’ version of this song is officially better than the original, and Puss in Boots’ eyes are my new emotional weakness.
- The Friends Finale: After 10 years, they finally got off the plane. Now what am I supposed to do at 8 PM on Thursdays? Talk to my actual family?
The Full 2004 Archive (Extended List)
- The “Yeah!” Usher Anthem: This song has been playing in every club, car, and grocery store for six months. If I hear that “Lil Jon” shout one more time, I might actually “lean back.”
- The Passion of the Christ: The only movie that made me feel like I needed a long nap and a therapy session after leaving the theater.
- The “Drop It Like It’s Hot” Click: Snoop Dogg and Pharrell created a song using only tongue clicks and a spray can, and it’s the coolest thing I’ve ever heard.
- The Spider-Man 2 Train Scene: Tobey Maguire’s face while stopping that train is exactly how I feel trying to finish my work before Friday at 5 PM.
- The “American Idiot” Comeback: Green Day is angry again, and suddenly every 14-year-old is wearing black eyeliner and a red tie.
- The Incredibles Realization: Edna Mode taught us the most important life lesson of 2004: “NO CAPES!”
- The “Hollaback Girl” Spelling Bee: I didn’t know how to spell “bananas” until Gwen Stefani yelled it at me over a marching band beat.
- The Million Dollar Baby Heartbreak: I went in for a boxing movie and came out a broken human being. Thanks, Clint Eastwood.
- The “Lose My Breath” Tempo: Destiny’s Child is moving so fast in this song that I’m getting out of breath just sitting on my couch watching the video.
- The Dodgeball “5 D’s”: Dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge. I’ve tried applying this to my taxes, but the IRS isn’t as forgiving as Patches O’Houlihan.
- The “Since U Been Gone”: Kelly Clarkson has successfully transitioned from “Idol” to “Pop-Rock Goddess,” and I’m here for the high notes.
- The Anchorman “I’m Kind of a Big Deal”: I’ve started introducing myself like Ron Burgundy. It hasn’t helped my career, but I do smell of rich mahogany.
- The “Gasolina” Explosion: Daddy Yankee has officially introduced the world to Reggaeton, and I’m currently nodding my head to words I don’t understand.
- The Saw Twist: I’ve never been so stressed about a guy in a bathroom and a puppet on a tricycle in my entire life.
- The “Mr. Brightside” Longevity: The Killers just released a song that I’m fairly certain will still be playing at every party in the year 2040.
- The Kill Bill Vol. 2 Talk: Less blood, more talking, and a five-point-palm-exploding-heart-technique that I’ve been practicing on my pillow.
- The “Leave (Get Out)” JoJo: She’s 13 years old and she’s already more mature about breakups than I am at 25.
- The Eternal Sunshine Memory: I wish I could erase the memory of my 2003 haircut, but Jim Carrey says that’s a bad idea.
- The “Tipsy” J-Kwon: Everybody in the club is getting tipsy, but in 2004, “the club” is just my friend’s basement with a disco ball from Spencer’s.
- The Notebook Expectations: Ryan Gosling has set the bar for romance so high that if I don’t build a house with my bare hands, I’m basically a failure.
- The “My Happy Ending” Avril: She’s still punky, she’s still moody, and she’s still wearing way too many bracelets.
- The Nintendo DS Dual Screens: I have two screens now! One for the game, and one for… well, I’m not sure, but it has a stylus and I feel productive.
- The “1, 2 Step” Ciara: Missy Elliott is on this track too. Missy is the fairy godmother of 2004 R&B.
- The 50 First Dates Premise: Adam Sandler falls in love with a girl who forgets him every day. It’s like my experience trying to teach my dad how to use a mouse.
- The “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”: The official song for walking home from the bus stop when it’s slightly drizzling.
- The Shark Tale Fish: Will Smith is a fish, Robert De Niro is a shark, and I’m confused why they all have human faces.
- The “She Will Be Loved” Video: Adam Levine is in a love triangle with a mother and a daughter. 2004 music videos were basically soap operas.
- The Bourne Supremacy Shaky Cam: I love the movie, but I need a Dramamine just to get through the car chase.
- The “Confessions Part II”: Usher has a secret, and he’s telling us in the smoothest way possible while standing in the rain (again).
- The Team America Puppets: I never thought I’d see a puppet action movie with a “MATT DAMON” cameo, but 2004 is full of surprises.
- The “Goodies” Ciara: The princess of “Crunk&B” has arrived, and the beat is so heavy it’s rattling my car’s side mirrors.
- The Catwoman Suit: Halle Berry in leather. The movie was a disaster, but the costume department clearly had a budget.
- The “Obsesión” Aventura: Bachata has officially entered the mainstream, and I’m trying to figure out how to move my hips without breaking something.
- The National Treasure Logic: Nicolas Cage is going to steal the Declaration of Independence. I’ve started looking for invisible ink on the back of my bills.
- The “Rich Girl” Gwen & Eve: A Fiddler on the Roof remix? Gwen Stefani is officially the most experimental person in pop.
- The World of Warcraft Launch: I’ll see you all in three years. I have to go collect 10 boar tusks and talk to a wizard.
- The “Pieces of Me” Ashlee Simpson: The SNL lip-sync incident. 2004 is the year we learned that “live” television is sometimes just a very loud CD player.
- The White Chicks “A Thousand Miles”: Terry Crews just made this song 100% cooler by singing it in a car.
- The “Welcome to My Life” Simple Plan: “Do you ever feel like breaking down?” Yes, mostly when my dial-up disconnects during a download.
- The Garden State Soundtrack: This album just told me that my life is deep, meaningful, and needs more acoustic guitar.
- The “Over and Over” Nelly & Tim McGraw: A rapper and a country singer. 2004 is the year of the “Wait, this actually works?” collaboration.
- The Hellboy Hand: Ron Perlman with a giant red stone hand. It’s the most specific superhero aesthetic ever.
- The “Beautiful Soul” Jesse McCartney: The official wallpaper of every teenage girl’s bedroom in 2004.
- The Lemony Snicket Visuals: Jim Carrey is three different people and everything looks like a dusty Victorian nightmare. I love it.
- The “Vertigo” U2: “Uno, dos, tres, catorce!” Bono’s math is wrong, but the guitar riff is so right I don’t even care.
- The Polar Express Uncanny Valley: Tom Hanks is everyone, and the kids’ eyes look like they’ve seen things no child should ever see.
- The “Numb/Encore” Mashup: Jay-Z and Linkin Park. It’s the collision of two worlds, and it sounds like the future of music.
- The Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason: She’s back, she’s in a Thai prison, and she’s still more relatable than any other character on screen.
- The “Lean Back” Dance: The easiest dance move in history. You just… lean back. Finally, a dance for people who can’t dance.
- The Meet the Fockers Tension: Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand vs. Robert De Niro. It’s the most awkward family dinner in cinematic history.
- The “Lonely” Akon: He sampled a high-pitched chipmunk voice and made it a global hit. 2004 was a weird time for vocal production.
- The Shaun of the Dead Genius: A rom-zom-com. It’s the first time I’ve wanted to fight zombies with a Queen soundtrack playing.
- The “Dip It Low” Christina Milian: 2004 is very concerned with how low we can dip, lean, or drop it.
- The Harold & Kumar White Castle Run: A movie that made a fast-food craving look like an epic Homeric odyssey.
- The “Burn” Usher: The ultimate breakup song for when you just want to sit in your room and watch a candle melt.
- The Alexander Epic: Three hours of Colin Farrell in a blonde wig. It’s a lot of movie for very little blonde wig.
- The “Toxic” Grammy: Britney finally won a Grammy. The world is finally acknowledging that the violin screech was high art.
- The Chronicles of Riddick: Vin Diesel is back in space. He has the best night-vision in the galaxy and the coolest goggles.
- The “Button Up” Fashion: Why is everyone wearing two polo shirts with both collars popped? We look like we’re trying to protect our necks from vampires.
- The Ray Jamie Foxx: A performance so good I forgot I was watching a movie and thought I was watching a documentary.
- The “Caught Up” Usher: Usher is still the king. He’s caught up in the rhythm, and so are we.
- The 2004 Razr Battery: It’s so thin the battery lasts about 12 minutes if you actually try to make a call.
- The 2004 Optimism: We’ve got Facebook, Gmail, and the Incredibles. The future is digital, social, and animated.
