55 Doctor Jokes: The 1996 “Managed Care & Medical Dramas” Edition

In 1996, medical humor evolved with the growing dominance of HMOs, which began dictating how many seconds doctors could dedicate to a patient. While the show ER (Emergency Room) was breaking records, making every intern feel like a rockstar, real doctors were struggling with the first attempts at computerized records and patients who “heard something on TV.” This was the year that waiting room time became a longer unit of time than the surgery itself, and surgeons began to be perceived as fighter pilots in scrubs.

The 1996 Top 10: The “Managed Care & Medical Dramas” Classics

  1. The HMO Speed: My doctor’s appointment lasted exactly 45 seconds. I asked him why he was in such a hurry. He said, “My HMO contract says if I spend more than a minute with you, I have to adopt you.”
  2. The Clooney Factor: A patient woke up from anesthesia and saw the surgeon. He asked, “Are you going to save my life like George Clooney?” The surgeon replied, “No, I’m going to charge you like George Clooney.”
  3. The Referral: I asked my primary care doctor for a specialist referral. He gave me a compass, a map, and a 1-800 number that’s been busy since 1994.
  4. The Internet Patient: My doctor has a new sign in his office: “$50 for a diagnosis. $75 if you looked it up on that new ‘World Wide Web’ thing first.”
  5. The Paperwork: I went in for a splinter. By the time I finished the 1996 insurance overhaul forms, the splinter had worked its way out, turned into a tree, and was providing shade in the parking lot.
  6. The Lab Results: “I have good news and bad news,” the doctor said. “The good news is you have a very rare disease.” “What’s the bad news?” “I’m naming it after my ex-wife.”
  7. The Hospital Gown: I asked for a gown that actually covers my back. The nurse laughed and said, “In 1996, privacy is an out-of-network luxury.”
  8. The Surgeon’s Ego: How many surgeons does it take to change a lightbulb? Just one—he holds the bulb and the whole world revolves around him.
  9. The Diagnosis: I told the doctor I feel like a deck of cards. He said, “I’ll deal with you later.”
  10. The Waiting Room: The magazines in the waiting room are so old that the “Current Events” section is speculating on whether or not the Berlin Wall will ever come down.

The Full 1996 Archive (Extended List)

  1. The Modern Medicine: “Doctor, I’m addicted to the 11 o’clock news.” “Don’t worry, it’s just a 24-hour bug.”
  2. The Stethoscope: He put the stethoscope to my chest and said, “Wait, I’m picking up a radio station from Des Moines.”
  3. The Second Opinion: “Doctor, I want a second opinion.” “Okay, come back tomorrow and I’ll tell you something else that’s wrong.”
  4. The Cost of Living: My doctor told me to stay active. He suggested I start by running away from his bills.
  5. The Therapy: I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me. He said, “Don’t be ridiculous. Not everyone has met you yet.”
  6. The Reflex: He tapped my knee, and nothing happened. He said, “Well, your insurance must have expired. Your body isn’t even trying anymore.”
  7. The Diet: “Stop eating anything that tastes good,” the doctor said. “That’ll be $100 for the consultation.”
  8. The HMO Entrance: Why did the skeleton go to the HMO? Because he didn’t have the guts to go to a private clinic.
  9. The Specialist: My specialist is so expensive, his waiting room has a cover charge and a two-drink minimum.
  10. The Surgery: “Will I be able to play the piano after the operation?” “Yes.” “Great, I’ve always wanted to learn!”
  11. The Pager: My doctor’s pager went off during surgery. He looked at it and said, “Great, my pizza is here.”
  12. The Physical: He told me I’m in great shape for a man who’s been dead for three days.
  13. The X-Ray: I asked to see my X-ray. He said, “I’d show you, but the lightbulb in the viewer isn’t covered by your plan.”
  14. The Eye Exam: “Read the bottom line,” the doctor said. I said, “It says ‘Printed in 1974’.”
  15. The Memory: “Doctor, I’ve got a terrible memory.” “Since when?” “Since when what?”
  16. The Pharmacist: My pharmacist said my prescription would be ready in 20 minutes. That was three days ago. I think he’s still trying to translate the doctor’s Sanskrit.
  17. The Exercise: “I run five miles a day,” I told the doctor. He said, “Who’s chasing you? Your creditors?”
  18. The Mirror: He put a mirror under my nose. It didn’t fog up. He said, “Well, the good news is you don’t have to worry about your cholesterol anymore.”
  19. The Hospital Bed: The bed was so uncomfortable I asked for a better one. The nurse said, “This is the ‘Economy Class’ of healing. Upgrade to ‘Business’ for an extra pillow.”
  20. The Surgeon’s Hands: “Are your hands shaking, Doctor?” “No, I’m just practicing for the earthquake scene in my screenplay.”
  21. The HMO Logic: My HMO won’t pay for my heart transplant, but they offered me a very nice coupon for a pacemaker battery.
  22. The Insurance: I told the doctor I don’t have insurance. He told me my flu was actually just “prolonged sneezing” and sent me home.
  23. The Blood Test: “We found some blood in your alcohol system,” the doctor noted.
  24. The Dentist: My dentist said I need a crown. I said, “Finally, someone who recognizes my royalty!”
  25. The Pill: “Take one of these every time you feel like complaining about the government.” “But Doctor, the bottle only has 30 pills!”
  26. The Anesthesia: “I’m going to put you to sleep now.” “Wait, is that a medical procedure or a threat?”
  27. The Miracle: A guy recovers from a coma after 20 years. The doctor says, “The good news is you’re healthy. The bad news is a movie ticket now costs eight dollars.”
  28. The Heart: “You have the heart of a lion,” the doctor said. “And a very angry zookeeper waiting in the lobby.”
  29. The Appointment: I called for an appointment in January. They told me the doctor could see me in August. I asked, “Can you make it the afternoon? I have a haircut in the morning.”
  30. The Nurse: The nurse was so mean, she told me to “stop bleeding, it’s making a mess.”
  31. The Fever: “You have a fever of 104.” “Is that bad?” “Only if you’re not a radiator.”
  32. The Broken Bone: “I broke my leg in three places.” “Stay out of those places!”
  33. The Medicine Cabinet: I have so many prescriptions from 1996 that my bathroom cabinet is officially considered a chemical weapons site.
  34. The Psychiatrist 2: “Doctor, I think I’m a bridge.” “What’s come over you?” “Two cars and a truck so far.”
  35. The Surgeon’s Fee: I asked the surgeon if he could do it for cheaper. He said, “Sure, do you mind if I use plastic utensils?”
  36. The Recovery: “You’ll be back on your feet in no time,” the doctor said. He was right—my car was repossessed to pay for the surgery.
  37. The Vitamin: “Should I take these vitamins?” “Yes, it gives the lab technicians something interesting to look at in your samples.”
  38. The Coffee: “Doctor, my thumb hurts when I drink coffee.” “Try taking the spoon out of the cup.”
  39. The EKG: The EKG machine started smoking. The doctor said, “Don’t worry, that’s just your internal fire.”
  40. The Generic: I asked for the generic version of the medicine. The doctor gave me a handful of dirt and told me to “think healthy thoughts.”
  41. The Scale: I stepped on the scale and it printed a ticket that said, “To be continued.”
  42. The Surgeon’s Luck: A surgeon is like a magician, but when he makes someone disappear, the police get involved.
  43. The HMO Gym: My HMO opened a gym. It’s just a room where you run away from people trying to give you a bill.
  44. The Vision: “Doctor, I see spots!” “Have you seen an eye doctor?” “No, just spots.”
  45. The Departure: As I left, the doctor said, “See you in two weeks.” I said, “Not if I see you first!” He said, “That’s exactly what the eye surgery is for.”
