58 Doctor Jokes: The 2000 “Surviving Y2K & The Genomic Revolution” Edition

In 2000, medical humor shifted from apocalypse anxiety to the high-tech promises of the new century. Doctors were laughing at the fact that the world didn’t end, while simultaneously trying to explain to patients that just because scientists mapped the human genome, it doesn’t mean they can “reprogram” a love for junk food out of their DNA. It was the era of the first “WebMD hypochondriacs” and the beginning of the “Bluetooth headset” era, where you couldn’t tell if a doctor was talking to you or a consultant in Switzerland.

The 2000 Top 10: The “New Era & Genome” Classics

  1. The Y2K Relief: My doctor walked into the exam room on January 2nd and hugged me. I asked why. He said, “My billing software still thinks it’s 2000, not 1900. You still owe me money!”
  2. The Genome Mapping: “We’ve mapped the human genome,” the doctor announced. “Does that mean you can fix my back?” I asked. He said, “No, but we can tell you exactly which gene is making you complain about it.”
  3. The SMS Thumb: I told my doctor my thumb hurts. He said, “Stop sending ‘Happy New Year’ texts to everyone in your contact list. It’s called T9-syndrome.”
  4. The WebMD Era: A patient came in and said, “According to the internet, I have a rare 14th-century plague.” The doctor said, “In that case, my fee is 40 gold coins and two chickens.”
  5. The Bluetooth Doctor: I thought my doctor was having a heated argument with me about my weight. Turns out he was just ordering a pizza on his new hands-free headset.
  6. The New Millennium Physical: “You’re in great shape for the 21st century,” the doctor said. I asked what that meant. “You’re 70% caffeine and your eyes are shaped like computer monitors.”
  7. The Insurance Upgrade: “Does my plan cover the new millennium?” “Only the first six months. After that, survival is an optional add-on.”
  8. The High-Tech Surgeon: My surgeon said he’s using a robot for my operation. I asked if it was safe. He said, “As long as it doesn’t try to install a Windows update mid-surgery.”
  9. The Specialist: I went to a specialist for “Digital Eye Strain.” He told me the cure was to look at a tree for five minutes. That cost me $250.
  10. The Diagnosis: “You have a classic case of ‘Post-Apocalyptic Letdown’.” “What’s that?” “You bought 500 cans of tuna for Y2K and now you actually have to eat them.”

The Full 2000 Archive (Extended List)

  1. The Vision: “Doctor, the world looks pixelated.” “That’s not a medical issue, you just need to step away from your CRT monitor.”
  2. The Surgeon’s Ego: He told me he’s a “New Millennium Surgeon.” I asked what changed. He said, “My prices.”
  3. The Pharmacy: “This new drug is a miracle of the year 2000.” “What does it do?” “It cures the side effects of the drug I gave you in 1999.”
  4. The Diet: “I want you on the ‘Genomic Diet’.” “What’s that?” “You only eat what your ancestors could catch—which in your case, looks like nothing but fast food.”
  5. The Exercise: “Do you use a pedometer?” “No, I just count how many times I walk to the fridge during Survivor.”
  6. The X-Ray: “Look at this scan.” “Is that my spine?” “No, that’s a glitch in our new ‘Millennium’ software. Your spine is actually fine.”
  7. The Psychiatrist: “Doctor, I’m afraid of the future.” “Don’t worry, the way the HMOs are going, you won’t have one.”
  8. The Insurance Form: The 2000 version of the form asks for my email address. I don’t have one. The nurse looked at me like I was a caveman.
  9. The Nurse: “Scale of 1 to 10?” “A 2000.” “Funny. Now seriously, stop crying.”
  10. The Stethoscope: “I hear a humming.” “Is it my heart?” “No, I think your cell phone is vibrating in your pocket.”
  11. The Reflex: He hit my knee with a digital hammer. It gave him a readout of my “Kicking Velocity.”
  12. The Memory: “Doctor, I forgot where I put my Y2K survival kit.” “Good. Leave it there.”
  13. The Surgeon’s Hands: “Steady as a rock!” “Is that because of the new robotic assist?” “No, I just had a lot of espresso.”
  14. The Diagnosis 2: “You have ‘New Year Fatigue’.” “From partying?” “No, from listening to people talk about their resolutions.”
  15. The Pharmacist 2: “This bottle is child-proof, tamper-proof, and Y2K-proof. It’s also patient-proof. Good luck getting a pill out.”
  16. The Ear Exam: “You have a ringing in your ears.” “It sounds like a Nokia ringtone.” “That’s because it IS a Nokia ringtone.”
  17. The Knee: “Your knee is clicking.” “Like a mouse?” “Exactly. You need a driver update.”
  18. The Surgeon 2: “I’m going to perform a ‘virtual surgery’.” “Does that mean I get a ‘virtual bill’?” “Don’t be ridiculous.”
  19. The Waiting Room: They finally replaced the 1980s magazines with a 1999 issue of Wired. Progress!
  20. The HMO Nurse: “Your call is important to us. Please hold until the next century.”
  21. The Transplant: “We found a donor for your sense of humor.” “Great!” “Bad news—it’s a doctor.”
  22. The Bill: “Why is there a ‘New Century’ tax on this?” “Because ‘1999’ was so last year.”
  23. The Heart: “Your pulse is steady.” “I’m Zen.” “No, you’re just asleep. Wake up, we’re done.”
  24. The Dentist: “You need a 21st-century filling.” “What’s the difference?” “It’s silver-colored and twice the price.”
  25. The HMO Gym: The only equipment is a treadmill that only works if you’re chasing a refund check.
  26. The Sleep Study: “You talk in your sleep.” “What do I say?” “You keep chanting ‘I love my insurance company’.”
  27. The Blood Pressure: It went through the roof when I saw the doctor was using an iMac to look at my brain.
  28. The Mirror: “I don’t like my face.” “I’m a surgeon, not a Photoshop filter.”
  29. The Referral: He sent me to a specialist in “Cyber-Hypochondria.” The guy just told me to delete my bookmarks.
  30. The Emergency: “Is there a doctor on the plane?” “I’m a doctor of Web Development!” “Sit down, Brian.”
  31. The Surgeon’s Hobby: “I collect 20th-century artifacts.” “Like what?” “An insurance policy that actually paid for things.”
  32. The Pill Logic: “Is this pill ‘smart’?” “It’s smarter than you—it knows exactly how to find your wallet.”
  33. The Diet 2: “No more ‘Millennium Burgers’.” “Can I have a ‘Century Salad’?” “Only if you skip the dressing.”
  34. The Surgeon’s Ego 2: “I’m the future of medicine.” “Then why are you using a wooden tongue depressor?”
  35. The Pharmacy Wait: I’ve been waiting so long that the ‘New Release’ drug is now available as a generic.
  36. The Stress: “You’re stressed about the economy.” “No, I’m stressed about your bill.”
  37. The Ear Exam 2: “I can’t hear out of my left ear.” “That’s where you hold your cell phone, isn’t it?”
  38. The Knee 2: “It hurts when I walk.” “Then take a Segway. It’s the year 2000!”
  39. The Pager: “My pager is obsolete.” “So is your stethoscope, but I still use it.”

  42. The Virus: “It’s a new strain for a new century. Very trendy.”

  45. The Surgeon’s Fee 2: He asked for my stock options as a deposit. I told him they’re for a dot-com company. He said, “Never mind, I’ll take cash.”
  46. The MRI: “Does this machine scan my soul?” “No, just your gallstones. Your soul is an out-of-network expense.”
  47. The Prescription: “I can’t read this.” “It says ‘Stop trying to decode your own DNA at home’.”
  48. The Final Word: “You’re officially a 21st-century patient.” “What does that mean?” “You’ll live longer, but you’ll spend all that extra time in my waiting room.”
