67 Doctor Jokes: The 1999 “Y2K Fever & Matrix Medical” Edition

In 1999, the medical world was obsessed with two things: making sure the life-support machines wouldn’t reset to 1900 at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and dealing with patients who thought they could learn neurosurgery in five seconds just by “downloading” it. It was the year of “The Matrix,” where doctors were asked if there was a “blue pill” for reality and a “red pill” for the HMO bill.

The 1999 Top 10: The “Millennium Bug & Simulation” Classics

  1. The Y2K Surgeon: My surgeon said he’s moving all operations to December 30th. He doesn’t want to be mid-incision when his scalpel decides it’s actually the year 1900.
  2. The Matrix Diagnosis: I told my doctor I felt like I was living in a simulation. He looked at my insurance coverage and said, “In this simulation, you can’t afford the cure. Take the blue pill and go home.”
  3. The Dial-Up Heart: “Your heart sounds like a 56k modem,” the doctor said. “I can’t tell if you’re having a palpitation or just trying to connect to AOL.”
  4. The Millennium Bug: A guy goes to the doctor and says, “I’m terrified of the year 2000.” The doctor says, “Don’t worry, I’ve seen your cholesterol. You won’t have to worry about 2001.”
  5. The New Tech: My doctor bought a new ‘Palm Pilot’ to keep track of patients. He accidentally deleted my gallbladder surgery and now I’m scheduled for a ‘Sync Error.’
  6. The Online Research: “I found my symptoms on a website,” the patient said. The doctor replied, “Well, the website says you’re a toaster. I think we need a second opinion.”
  7. The HMO Logic: Why did the 1999 doctor cross the road? Because the insurance company wouldn’t authorize the sidewalk.
  8. The Waiting Room: I’ve been here so long I’ve watched the entire ‘Star Wars’ prequel trilogy in the lobby. Twice. My fracture has already healed into a different shape.
  9. The Specialist: I asked for a specialist. He sent me to a guy who only treats people who were born on a leap year during a lunar eclipse.
  10. The Bill: “This bill is huge!” “Well, it includes a surcharge for the millennium. We have to pay for the ‘Year 2000’ stickers on all the equipment.”

The Full 1999 Archive (Extended List)

  1. The Vision: “Doctor, I see code everywhere!” “Stop watching The Matrix and take your glasses off.”
  2. The Surgeon’s Ego: He told me he’s the best in the world. I asked for proof. He showed me his high score on a medical simulator game.
  3. The Pharmacy: “This medicine has 99 side effects.” “Well, the millennium has one: everything is about to break.”
  4. The Diet: “Eat like it’s 1899,” the doctor said. “No electricity, no processed sugar, and lots of manual labor.”
  5. The Exercise: “I started using a treadmill.” “How’s that going?” “Great, I use it to hang my laundry.”
  6. The X-Ray: “There’s a dark spot on your rib.” “Is it a tumor?” “No, it’s a smudge on the scanner. Y2K is starting early.”
  7. The Psychiatrist: “Doctor, I think I’m a floppy disk.” “Too late, everyone’s moving to CDs. You’re obsolete.”
  8. The Insurance Form: I had to sign a waiver stating that if the world ends on Jan 1st, I still owe the co-pay.
  9. The Nurse: “I need a glass of water.” “Wait until the computer updates. It’s checking your hydration quota.”
  10. The Stethoscope: “I hear a whistling sound.” “Is it my lungs?” “No, I think it’s your bank account emptying.”
  11. The Reflex: He hit my knee. I kicked him. He said, “That’s a very 20th-century reaction.”
  12. The Memory: “Doctor, I can’t remember my password.” “This is a medical clinic, not an ISP.”
  13. The Surgeon’s Hands: “Are you nervous?” “No, but my computer is. It thinks I’m a 19-year-old farmer from 1901.”
  14. The Diagnosis: “You have ‘End-of-Century Syndrome’.” “What are the symptoms?” “Buying a lot of canned beans and water.”
  15. The Pharmacist: “This pill will help you sleep.” “Until the new year?” “Hopefully.”
  16. The Ear Exam: “You have a lot of wax.” “Is it from the candles I bought for the Y2K blackout?”
  17. The Knee: “Your knee is old.” “I’m only 30!” “Well, in ‘computer years,’ you’re a mainframe from the 70s.”
  18. The Surgeon: “I’m going to operate.” “Do you have a backup plan?” “Yes, if the power goes out, I have a flashlight and a textbook.”
  19. The Waiting Room 2: They have a copy of Time magazine with ‘Man of the Year: 1982’ on the cover.
  20. The HMO Nurse: “Are you dying?” “Maybe.” “Well, call back when you’re sure. We hate paperwork.”
  21. The Transplant: “We found a donor, but he’s a Mac user and you’re a PC. We’re worried about compatibility.”
  22. The Bill 2: I asked for a discount. He said, “Wait until Jan 1st. If the computers crash, maybe the bill will disappear.”
  23. The Heart: “Your heart is skipping a beat.” “Is it love?” “No, it’s caffeine. Stop drinking ‘Surge’ soda.”
  24. The Dentist: “You have a cavity.” “Can I pay for it in the next millennium?”
  25. The HMO Gym: The only machine they have is a ‘Paperwork Shredder.’
  26. The Sleep Study: “You stop breathing 10 times a night.” “Is that bad?” “Only if you want to keep living.”
  27. The Blood Pressure: It hit an all-time high when I saw the price of a ‘Y2K-compliant’ thermometer.
  28. The Mirror: “Doctor, I look tired.” “That’s because you’ve been up all night downloading MP3s on Napster.”
  29. The Referral: “I’m sending you to a specialist in 1900. Because that’s where your records are going next week.”
  30. The Emergency: “He’s not breathing!” “Quick, check his insurance card before he turns into a ghost!”
  31. The Surgeon’s Hobby: “I collect antique medical tools.” “Like what?” “This scalpel from 1998.”
  32. The Pill Logic: “This pill is blue.” “Does it mean I’m in the Matrix?” “No, it means it’s for your allergies.”
  33. The Diet 2: “No more pizza.” “But it’s the last Friday of the millennium!” “Fine, one slice, but no pepperoni.”
  34. The Surgeon’s Ego 2: “I’m a god in the OR.” “And a pauper in the parking lot?”
  35. The Pharmacy Wait: I’ve been waiting so long the medicine is now past its expiration date.
  36. The Stress: “You’re stressed about Y2K.” “Everyone is!” “I’m not, I’m a vet. Dogs don’t care about computers.”
  37. The Ear Exam 2: “I hear ringing.” “It’s probably your pager. It’s trying to tell you it’s about to die.”
  38. The Knee 2: “I need a replacement.” “We only have parts from 1995. They might not be compatible with the new year.”
  39. The Pager: “My pager is beeping!” “Is it a patient?” “No, it’s a ‘Happy New Year’ message from 1900.”
  40. The Generic 2: I asked for the generic medicine. They gave me a sugar cube and a ‘Get Well Soon’ sticker.
  41. The HMO Nurse 2: “We don’t cover ‘End of the World’ anxiety. That’s a pre-existing condition.”

  44. The Vitamin: “Take this vitamin. It’s ‘Y2K-Certified’.” “What does that mean?” “It costs $5 more.”
  45. The Surgeon’s Fee 2: He asked for my car as a down payment. I told him it’s a 1999 model. He said, “Perfect, I need a trade-in.”

  47. The Prescription: “I can’t read this.” “It says ‘Good luck in the next millennium’.”
  48. The Dentist 2: “This might hurt.” “The drill?” “No, the fact that your insurance ends at midnight.”
  49. The Emergency Room 2: I’ve been here so long I’ve actually started working here. I’m now a junior resident.
  50. The Final Word: “You’re healthy!” “Can I celebrate?” “Sure, but don’t do anything that requires a computer after midnight.”
  51. The Lab Result: “Your blood work is in.” “And?” “You’re 10% caffeine and 90% panic.”
  52. The Specialist 2: “He’s the best eye doctor.” “Why?” “He’s the only one who can see the Y2K bug.”
  53. The Hospital Bed: “This bed is hard.” “It’s a ‘Millennium Edition’ bed. It’s designed for maximum discomfort.”
