39 Hollywood & Acting Jokes: The 2013 “Wolf’s Quaaludes, Frozen Ears & Space Panic” Edition

In 2013, Hollywood went to extremes. It was the year we learned that a three-hour movie about stockbrokers could feel like a theme park ride, that a princess didn’t need a prince if she had a singing snowman, and that George Clooney is actually the most relaxing person to die with in orbit. If you weren’t busy shouting “Ludes!” like Leonardo DiCaprio, you were probably trying to get “Let It Go” out of your head (spoiler: it’s still there).

The 2013 Industry Top 10: “Champagne, Snowmen & Zero Gravity”

  1. The Wolf of Wall Street Quaaludes: Why was Leonardo DiCaprio crawling toward a Lamborghini? Because he proved that the most impressive bit of acting in 2013 wasn’t a monologue—it was a 10-minute struggle with his own nervous system while trying to open a car door.
  2. The Frozen Takeover: Why did every parent in 2013 lose their mind? Because Disney released a song so catchy it became a biohazard, and a snowman named Olaf became the most powerful entity in global merchandising.
  3. The Gravity Hyperventilation: Why was Sandra Bullock so tired? Because she spent the whole year spinning in circles in front of a green screen, proving that space is beautiful, but it’s mostly just a place where everything you touch explodes or floats away.
  4. The Iron Man 3 Mandarin: Why were the fans so mad? Because Marvel spent months promising a terrifying villain, only to reveal that he was actually just a hungover British actor named Trevor who really wanted a cracker.
  5. The Man of Steel Collateral Damage: Why was Superman so moody? Because Zack Snyder decided that saving the world should involve destroying 40% of Metropolis and having a very long, very loud therapy session with General Zod.
  6. The Her Love Story: Why was Joaquin Phoenix dating his phone? Because Scarlett Johansson’s voice was so charismatic that it made everyone in 2013 realize their actual relationships were much more boring than an OS with a personality.
  7. The 12 Years a Slave Intensity: Why was it so quiet in the theater? Because Steve McQueen made a movie so powerful and brutal that the audience felt guilty even for eating popcorn during the credits.
  8. The Great Gatsby Glitter: Why the hip-hop soundtrack? Because Baz Luhrmann decided that 1922 would be much cooler if it looked like a Coachella party and everyone drank champagne like it was water.
  9. The This Is the End Apocalypse: Why was Danny McBride the villain? For a movie that proved the best way to handle the end of the world is to lock yourself in James Franco’s house and argue about Milky Ways.
  10. The American Hustle Hair: Why was the plot so confusing? Because the audience was too distracted by Bradley Cooper’s perm, Christian Bale’s comb-over, and Amy Adams’ dresses to care about a fake Arab sheik.

The Full 2013 Acting & Industry Archive

  1. The Pacific Rim Punch: Why the giant robots? For proving that if a monster comes out of the ocean, the only logical solution is to build a skyscraper-sized robot and hit it with an oil tanker.
  2. The Conjuring Claps: Why the hands? For making everyone in 2013 terrified of playing “Hide and Clap” or going into their own basement for a month.
  3. The World War Z Treadmill: Why Brad Pitt? For a zombie movie where the undead didn’t shuffle—they swarmed like a giant, terrifying wave of CGI locusts.
  4. The Dallas Buyers Club Transformation: Why Matthew McConaughey? For the year the “McConaissance” peaked, proving that a cowboy hat and losing 50 pounds is the ultimate recipe for an Oscar.
  5. The Despicable Me 2 Minions: Why the “Banana” song? For the moment we realized the Minions had officially won the war for our attention (and our wallets).
  6. The Prisoners Whistle: Why Hugh Jackman? For proving that “Wolverine” can be even scarier when he’s just a dad with a hammer and a lot of questions.
  7. The Rush Ear-drums: Why Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl? For making Formula 1 look like a life-or-death gladiatorial match where the only thing louder than the engines was the ego.
  8. The Now You See Me Logic: Why the magic? For a movie that suggested that if you’re a magician, you can rob a bank in Paris from a stage in Vegas, as long as you don’t think about it too hard.
  9. The Captain Phillips “I’m the Captain Now”: Why Barkhad Abdi? For a breakout performance that made everyone realize that Tom Hanks is most vulnerable when he’s on a boat.
  10. The Star Trek Into Darkness Secret: Why the Khan lie? For a marketing campaign that spent a year saying “He’s not Khan,” only for the movie to say “He’s definitely Khan.”
  11. The Fast & Furious 6 Tank: Why the bridge jump? For a movie that proved the “Family” is officially immune to gravity, friction, and common sense.
  12. The Inside Llewyn Davis Cat: Why the folk music? For a Coen Brothers movie that proved life is a circle, and if you’re a musician in 1961, that circle is mostly just snow and disappointment.
  13. The Evil Dead Remake: Why the rain? For proving that you can remake a classic as long as you use 50,000 gallons of fake blood and a chainsaw.
  14. The We’re the Millers “No Ragrets”: Why the tattoo? For teaching us that if you’re going to smuggle drugs, you need a fake family and a son who gets bitten by a spider in the worst place possible.
  15. The Lone Ranger Train: Why the bird on the head? For a movie so expensive and weird that it made the actual West look like a quiet, sensible place.
  16. The Anchorman 2 Shark: Why the wait? For a sequel that proved Ron Burgundy is still classier than anyone else, especially when he’s nursing a baby shark back to health.
  17. The Blue Jasmine Breakdown: Why Cate Blanchett? For a performance that proved that Chanel and Xanax are the only things keeping the upper class from total collapse.
  18. The Purge Law: Why the masks? For a movie that suggested that once a year, all crime is legal, which mostly just means people wear creepy masks and stand on your porch.
  19. The Kick-Ass 2 Jim Carrey: Why the silence? For a sequel that was so violent even its biggest star decided he didn’t want to promote it.
  20. The Pain & Gain Muscles: Why Mark Wahlberg and The Rock? For proving that a Michael Bay movie can be a “small indie film” as long as everyone is on steroids and kidnapping people.
  21. The Don Jon Porn: Why Joseph Gordon-Levitt? For a movie that suggested that even the most attractive man in New Jersey would rather look at a screen than Scarlett Johansson.
  22. The Olympus Has Fallen vs. White House Down: Why the double invasion? For the year we learned that the White House is surprisingly easy to take over, especially if you’re Gerard Butler or Channing Tatum.
  23. The 47 Ronin CGI: Why Keanu Reeves? For a movie where Japanese history met a giant digital dragon and everyone involved looked very, very confused.
  24. The About Time Tears: Why the time travel? For a rom-com that tricked everyone into thinking it was about dating, but was actually a secret weapon to make you call your dad.
  25. The Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters: Why the leather? For proving that in 2013, any fairy tale could be an R-rated action movie with cross-bows and a lot of attitude.
  26. The Monsters University Scaring: Why the prequel? For proving that even Mike and Sulley had to deal with college roommates and awkward fraternities.
  27. The Identity Thief Face-punch: Why Melissa McCarthy? For proving that she is the only person who can steal Jason Bateman’s life and make us laugh about it.
  28. The Escape Plan Duo: Why Stallone and Schwarzenegger? For the movie we waited 30 years for, where they finally teamed up to break out of a prison that was basically a giant LEGO set.
  29. The 2013 Final Industry Vibe: Why the “Blockbuster Bloat”? Because it was the year of the $200 million gamble, where movies either became billion-dollar legends (Frozen) or vanished into the “R.I.P.D.” void.
