54 Sports Jokes: The 2004 “Curse-Breakers & Olympic Glory” Edition

In 2004, the impossible became routine. The Red Sox finally stopped blaming a dead guy for their losses, Greece turned the soccer world into a Greek tragedy for everyone else, and a swimmer in Athens spent so much time on the podium he probably should have paid rent there.

The 2004 Top 10: The “Red Sox & Michael Phelps” Classics

  1. The Red Sox World Series: Why did the city of Boston finally stop crying? Because the Red Sox swept the Cardinals and ended the 86-year “Curse of the Bambino,” proving that the only thing stronger than a hex is a “Bloody Sock” and David Ortiz in the clutch.
  2. The Greece Euro 2004: Why was the rest of Europe so confused? Because Greece, the 150-1 long shots, won the European Championship by playing a defense so boring it was legally classified as a sleeping aid—but it worked.
  3. The Michael Phelps Show: Why did the Athens pool smell like gold? Because Michael Phelps won eight medals, six of them gold, and made the rest of the world’s best swimmers look like they were still using floaties.
  4. The Malice at the Palace: Why was a basketball game more dangerous than a boxing match? Because the Pacers and Pistons got into a brawl that spilled into the stands, proving that “fan interaction” has its limits—especially when Ron Artest is involved.
  5. The Arsenal “Invincibles”: Why was the Premier League trophy gold? Because Arsenal went an entire 38-game season without losing a single match, making every other team wonder if the Gunners were playing on a higher difficulty setting.
  6. The Tom Brady Second Ring: Why were the Patriots becoming the most hated team in America? Because they won their second Super Bowl in three years, and Tom Brady was starting to look like a guy who would never, ever go away.
  7. The Lance Armstrong Six-Peat: Why was the Tour de France a one-man parade? Because Lance won his record-setting sixth straight title, though the record books would later need a lot of “correction tape”.
  8. The Roger Federer Three-Slam: Why was the tennis tour so predictable? Because Federer won the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, making it clear that the “Swiss Maestro” era was officially a dictatorship.
  9. The Detroit Pistons Upset: Why were the Lakers “Galacticos” so quiet? Because the Pistons beat Shaq, Kobe, Malone, and Payton in five games, proving that five guys who play together are better than four superstars who don’t talk to each other.
  10. The Maria Sharapova Wimbledon: Why was the grunting suddenly famous? Because a 17-year-old Sharapova beat Serena Williams in the final and showed the world that “Power Tennis” had a new, very loud face.

The Full 2004 Sports Jokes Archive

  5. The Phil Mickelson Masters: Why was “Lefty” jumping? Because he finally won his first Major with a birdie on the 18th, ending the “Best Player Never to Win a Major” conversation forever.
  6. The NBA All-Star Game: Why was it the “Shaq Show”? Because Shaq won the MVP in LA, but it was the last time he and Kobe would share a locker room as teammates before the “divorce”.
  7. The Hicham El Guerrouj Double: Why was the 1500m/5000m double so special? Because the Moroccan legend finally won the Olympic gold he’d been chasing for a decade—and then decided to win another one just for fun.

  14. The Porto Champions League: Why was Jose Mourinho running down the touchline? Because he led Porto to a 3-0 win in the final and then immediately left for Chelsea to become “The Special One”.
  15. The Barry Bonds 700th: Why were the balls still flying? Because Bonds hit his 700th home run, joining Ruth and Aaron in a club that was starting to look a lot more suspicious than it used to.
  16. The Ryder Cup 18.5 – 9.5: Why was Europe so smug? Because they demolished the US team on American soil, proving that a team of Europeans who like each other is better than a team of Americans who don’t.
  17. The Pat Tillman Tragedy: Why was the NFL so somber? Because the man who left a multi-million dollar contract to serve his country was killed in Afghanistan, reminding us that heroes exist far outside the stadium.
  18. The Connecticut Double: Why was UConn the center of the world? Because they became the first school to win both the Men’s and Women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same year.

  24. The Ron Artest Suspension: Why was the season over? Because he got an 86-game ban, the longest in NBA history, giving him plenty of time to work on his rap album.
  25. The Retief Goosen US Open: Why was the grass so dead? Because the greens at Shinnecock Hills were so fast that Goosen was the only one who could putt without the ball ending up in another county.
  26. The Smarty Jones Triple Crown Fail: Why was Philadelphia crying? Because the horse won the Derby and the Preakness but got caught at the finish line of the Belmont, proving that “Birdstone” was the most hated name in racing.
  27. The Olympic Shot Put at Olympia: Why was it “Old School”? Because they held the event at the site of the ancient Games, proving that some sports are better without the neon lights.

  33. The Greece Opening Ceremony: Why was the host team last and first? Because Greece traditionally leads the parade, and the host goes last—so they did both, which is the most “Olympic” flex possible.
