42 Oscars Jokes: The 2006 “Crash, Cowboy Snubs & Jon Stewart’s Debut” Edition

In 2006, the 78th Academy Awards delivered a plot twist that even the best screenwriters didn’t see coming. It was the year the Academy decided that a movie about car crashes and racial tension in L.A. was better than a groundbreaking romance in the mountains of Wyoming. Jon Stewart hosted, George Clooney won for politics, and we all learned that being the frontrunner is the most dangerous job in Hollywood.

The 2006 Red Carpet Top 10: “Tuxedos & Twists”

  1. The Jack Nicholson Face: Why was Jack Nicholson so confused? Because when he opened the envelope and saw Crash, he looked like he had just been told that the Lakers were moving to Boston.
  2. The “Brokeback Mountain” Snub: Why didn’t the cowboys win Best Picture? Because the Academy decided that while “I wish I knew how to quit you” is a great line, “Everyone in L.A. is angry” is a better lifestyle choice.
  3. The Reese Witherspoon Win: Why was her Best Actress win so predictable? Because in 2006, playing June Carter Cash was the only way to prove you were more than just “Legally Blonde.”
  4. The Jon Stewart Opener: Why was Jon Stewart the host? To remind the stars that while they were busy winning gold, the rest of the world was busy watching him on Comedy Central to understand the news.
  5. The Three 6 Mafia History: Why was the win for “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” so iconic? Because it was the first time an Oscar ceremony felt more like a Memphis club than a stuffy ballroom.
  6. The George Clooney “Political” Win: Why did he win Best Supporting Actor for Syriana? Because the Academy wanted to reward him for growing a beard and making a movie that required a PhD to understand the plot.
  7. The Philip Seymour Hoffman Lock: Why was his Capote win a sure thing? Because he didn’t just play Truman Capote; he turned into a five-foot-tall ball of high-pitched genius and sadness.
  8. The “March of the Penguins” Win: Why did the penguins win Best Documentary? Because even in a room full of A-listers, a flightless bird walking across ice is still more likable than a studio executive.
  9. The Rachel Weisz Win: Why did she win for The Constant Gardener? To prove that being a pregnant activist in Africa is the most dramatic way to earn a gold statue.
  10. The Best Animated Feature: Why did Wallace & Gromit win? Because the Academy decided that claymation and a dog who doesn’t talk is more sophisticated than a bunch of CGI lions.

The Full 2006 Oscars Jokes Archive

  1. The “Crash” Shock: Why did it win? Because the Academy voters actually lived in L.A. and felt seen by a movie where everyone is stuck in traffic and mad about it.
  2. The Best Director Consolation: Why did Ang Lee win? Because the Academy wanted to say, “We love your directing, we just didn’t like the ending of your movie as much as a car accident.”
  3. The Best Original Screenplay: Why did Crash win this too? To prove that if you interweave 20 different characters, the voters will eventually find one they like.
  4. The Best Adapted Screenplay: Why did Brokeback Mountain win? Because turning a short story into a cultural phenomenon is the hardest “Method” in Hollywood.
  5. The Best Costume Design: Why did Memoirs of a Geisha win? Because silk and kimonos are the official weakness of the Academy’s fashion branch.
  6. The Best Art Direction: Why did the Geisha movie sweep the visuals? Because they built a version of Japan in California that looked better than the real thing.
  7. The Best Cinematography: Why did Dion Beebe win? Because he made a story about a girl in Kyoto look like a dream you don’t want to wake up from.
  8. The “King Kong” Technical Wins: Why did Peter Jackson win three Oscars? To prove that even if he’s not in the Shire, he still owns the “Sound and Visuals” department.
  9. The Best Sound Mixing: Why did the giant ape win? Because the roar of a 25-foot gorilla is the only thing louder than the fans complaining about the Best Picture win.
  10. The Best Sound Editing: Why did King Kong win again? To show that “Screaming in New York” is a very complex technical achievement.
  11. The Best Visual Effects: Why did Kong beat the Jedis? Because a digital ape with feelings is more impressive than a digital lightsaber with none.
  12. The Best Makeup Win: Why did The Chronicles of Narnia win? Because turning a man into a goat-man (Mr. Tumnus) is the peak of 2006 technology.
  13. The Best Original Score: Why did Gustavo Santaolalla win? Because a single guitar playing a lonely tune is the official sound of the Wyoming mountains.
  14. The “Hustle & Flow” Performance: Why did the audience look so stunned? Because they weren’t used to seeing a pimp’s anthem performed between two string quartets.
  15. The Best Foreign Language Film: Why did Tsotsi win? Because South Africa reminded the world that “Redemption” is a universal language.
  16. The Best Documentary Feature: Why were there people in penguin suits? To remind us that nature is beautiful, but Hollywood branding is eternal.
  17. The Best Film Editing: Why did Crash take it? Because keeping all those separate stories from colliding into a mess is the definition of “Editing.”
  18. The Best Live Action Short: Why did Six Shooter win? Because Martin McDonagh proved that before he made In Bruges, he was already the king of dark Irish comedy.
  19. The Best Animated Short: Why did The Moon and the Son win? Because the Academy loves a short film that makes them feel guilty about their relationship with their parents.
  20. The Honorary Award for Robert Altman: Why? Because after seven nominations and zero wins, the Academy realized they should probably give him a statue before he directed a movie about them.
  21. The Best Documentary Short: Why did A Note of Triumph win? To show that World War II is still the most reliable topic for an Oscar voter.
  22. The Felicity Huffman Nomination: Why was she there for Transamerica? To prove that a “Desperate Housewife” could be the most courageous actor in the room.
  23. The Joaquin Phoenix “Walk the Line” Snub: Why didn’t he win? Because the Academy decided that while he sang like Johnny Cash, Philip Seymour Hoffman talked like Capote.
  24. The Best Song Category: Why was it so weird? Because it was the only year a rap group and a country singer were fighting for the same piece of gold.
  25. The Meryl Streep 14th Nomination: Why? Because it’s her annual tradition to show up, look fabulous, and remind everyone she’s better than them.
  26. The Tom Hanks Presenter Bit: Why was he there? To give the show some “Adult Supervision” before things got too crazy.
  27. The Jon Stewart “Political” Jokes: Why were they so sharp? Because 2006 was the year Hollywood decided that “Being Relevant” was more important than “Being Glamorous.”
  28. The Red Carpet Fashion: Why was everyone wearing “Earth Tones”? To show that they were serious artists who cared about the environment (and their stylists).
  29. The Governor’s Ball: Why was the mood so tense? Because half the room was still trying to figure out how the cowboys lost to a movie about L.A. car insurance.
  30. The Best Art Direction: Why did Memoirs of a Geisha win? Because the Academy decided that umbrellas and lanterns are more artistic than actual buildings.
  31. The “Good Night, and Good Luck” Snub: Why didn’t George Clooney win Best Director? Because black-and-white newsrooms are cool, but the Academy prefers their politics with a side of Brokeback or Crash.
  32. The 2006 Final Oscars Vibe: Why was it a “Classic” year? Because it taught us that the most certain thing about the 2006 Oscars was that nobody—not even the winners—knew what was going to happen when that final envelope opened.
