37 Oscars Jokes: The 2002 “Halle’s History, Shrek’s Arrival & Denzel’s Double” Edition

In 2002, the 74th Academy Awards moved into their permanent home at the Kodak Theatre, and they brought enough history to fill every seat. It was the year Halle Berry broke the glass ceiling, Denzel Washington proved lightning can strike twice, and a green ogre finally got the respect he deserved from the elite of Tinseltown.

The 2002 Red Carpet Top 10: “History & High Stakes”

  1. The Halle Berry Dress: Why was her Elie Saab dress so famous? Because it was half-embroidery, half-mesh, and 100% destined to be in a museum the moment she started her legendary acceptance speech.
  2. The “Shrek” Victory: Why was the new Best Animated Feature category so important? Because it proved that a farting ogre and a talking donkey have more “artistic merit” than most of the people on the red carpet.
  3. The Denzel vs. Russell Rematch: Why was the Best Actor race so tense? Because Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe were in a heavyweight title fight, and this time, the “Bad Cop” beat the “Mathematician.”
  4. The Halle Berry Speech: Why did the orchestra stop playing? Because they realized that when history is being made and someone is sobbing that hard, you don’t play the “get off the stage” music unless you want to be the most hated person in America.
  5. The “Beautiful Mind” Sweep: Why did it win Best Picture? Because Hollywood loves a story about a genius who overcomes his own brain, especially if he does it while looking like Russell Crowe.
  6. The Whoopi Goldberg “Showgirl” Entrance: Why did Whoopi dress like a Las Vegas showgirl? To remind everyone that even though the Oscars moved to a fancy new theater, it’s still just a very expensive variety show.
  7. The Sidney Poitier Tribute: Why did everyone stand up for so long? Because when the man who paved the way gets an Honorary Oscar on the same night Denzel and Halle win, you stay standing until your knees give out.
  8. The “Lord of the Rings” snub: Why didn’t The Fellowship of the Ring win Best Picture? Because the Academy wasn’t ready to admit that elves and hobbits are just as dramatic as 1950s mathematicians.
  9. The Jim Broadbent Surprise: Why did he win Best Supporting Actor? To prove that being a lovable British man in Iris is the ultimate “dark horse” strategy.
  10. The Jennifer Connelly Win: Why did she win for A Beautiful Mind? Because she proved that being the wife of a genius is 10% support and 90% reacting to things that aren’t actually there.

The Full 2002 Oscars Jokes Archive

  1. The “Moulin Rouge!” Vibe: Why was the show so colorful? Because Baz Luhrmann convinced the Academy that more glitter equals more talent.
  2. The Best Animated Feature Debut: Why did Shrek beat Monsters, Inc.? Because the Academy decided that “All Star” by Smash Mouth is a better anthem for the new millennium than actual monster roars.
  3. The Best Original Screenplay: Why did Gosford Park win? Because Julian Fellowes proved that British people being mean to each other in a big house is a timeless cinematic treasure.
  4. The “Training Day” Win: Why did Denzel win for playing a villain? Because sometimes the Academy wants to reward the guy who makes “King Kong ain’t got sh*t on me” sound like Shakespeare.
  5. The Best Makeup Win: Why did The Lord of the Rings take it? Because making a man look like a 111-year-old hobbit is more work than making a star look like they’ve had a bad night.
  6. The Best Visual Effects: Why was The Fellowship of the Ring a lock? Because it was the first time we saw a cave troll and didn’t immediately think “that’s just a guy in a suit.”
  7. The Best Supporting Actress: Why did Jennifer Connelly win? Because she managed to stay grounded while Russell Crowe was busy seeing code on the windows.
  8. The Woody Allen Appearance: Why did he finally show up? Because after 9/11, even the most reclusive New Yorker realized that the Oscars are a pretty good place to say “I love this city.”
  9. The Best Sound Win: Why did Black Hawk Down win? Because the Academy loves the sound of helicopters almost as much as they love the sound of their own applause.
  10. The Best Film Editing: Why did the war movie win? Because cutting 100 hours of desert footage into a coherent battle is the ultimate puzzle.
  11. The Best Cinematography: Why did The Lord of the Rings win? Because Andrew Lesnie made New Zealand look like a planet that actually exists in a different galaxy.
  12. The Best Original Score: Why did Howard Shore win? Because he gave us a theme song that made us want to walk to a volcano with our best friend.
  13. The Best Adapted Screenplay: Why did A Beautiful Mind win? Because turning a complicated biography into a Hollywood thriller is the most “Academy” move in the book.
  14. The Best Art Direction: Why did Moulin Rouge! win? Because they used more red paint than the rest of the 2002 movies combined.
  15. The Best Costume Design: Why did Moulin Rouge! sweep the style awards? Because Nicole Kidman in a corset is the official definition of “Cinematic Glamour.”
  16. The Best Documentary Feature: Why did Murder on a Sunday Morning win? To remind us that true crime was a thing long before podcasts existed.
  17. The Best Foreign Language Film: Why did No Man’s Land win? Because the Academy loves a war satire that makes everyone feel equally uncomfortable.
  18. The Best Song Performance: Why did Randy Newman finally win? Because after 16 nominations, the Academy realized that if they didn’t give him an Oscar, he might never stop writing songs about monsters.
  19. The “Amélie” Snub: Why didn’t the French film win more? Because the Academy likes their “Quirky” with a side of “American subtitles,” apparently.
  20. The Best Live Action Short: Why did The Accountant win? Because it’s the only movie where taxes and shotguns are equally important plot points.
  21. The Best Animated Short: Why did For the Birds win? Because Pixar proved that bullying doesn’t pay, especially if you’re a tiny bird on a telephone wire.
  22. The Arthur Hiller Tribute: Why did he get the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award? Because in Hollywood, being a “Good Person” is the rarest award of all.
  23. The Best Sound Editing: Why did Pearl Harbor win? To ensure that even if the critics hated the movie, the sound designers could still pay their rent.
  24. The Glenn Close Appearance: Why was she there? To remind everyone that she is still the “Queen of Nominations” who is just waiting for her turn.
  25. The Robert Redford Honorary Award: Why? Because he’s the only man who could start Sundance and still be the coolest guy in the room at the Kodak Theatre.
  26. The Governor’s Ball: Why was the food so expensive? Because after four hours of history being made, the only thing more important than a statue is a gold-dusted chocolate truffle.
  27. The 2002 Final Oscars Vibe: Why was it a “Classic” year? Because it was the night the Academy finally looked at the world as it was, and not just how it used to be, making the 2002 Oscars a true turning point for Hollywood.
