68 Mother-in-Law Jokes: The 1997 “Titanic & Tamagotchi” Edition

In 1997, the world was obsessed with the sinking of the Titanic, the birth of Dolly the sheep (the first clone), and the frantic beeping of Tamagotchis in every teenager’s pocket. It was a year of grand drama and high maintenance. Naturally, the mother-in-law joke took on these themes—becoming a mix of epic disaster metaphors and the realization that some guests, much like a cloned sheep, are just double the trouble.

The 1997 Top 10: The “King of the World” Classics

  1. The Titanic: My mother-in-law watched Titanic and complained that the iceberg didn’t do a thorough enough job.
  2. The Tamagotchi: My wife gave her mother a Tamagotchi. It died in two hours because it couldn’t handle the constant criticism of its “pixelated lifestyle.”
  3. The Cloning: They cloned a sheep in 1997. My mother-in-law is terrified they’ll clone me; she says one version of “disappointment” is quite enough.
  4. The King of the World: I stood on the balcony and shouted, “I’m the king of the world!” My mother-in-law shouted back, “The king of the trash cans is more like it—now take them out!”
  5. The Pathfinder: NASA sent a rover to Mars this year. I asked if they had any room for a one-way passenger with a very large hat collection.
  6. The Harry Potter: The first Harry Potter book came out. My mother-in-law read it and got offended; she says the “wicked witch” characters are a gross understatement.
  7. The Lifeboat: What’s the difference between my mother-in-law and the Titanic? The Titanic had enough sense to stop when it hit a cold shoulder.
  8. The DVD: I bought a DVD player. My mother-in-law hates it because you can’t “accidentally” record over her favorite soap operas with your wedding video anymore.
  9. The Deep Blue: IBM’s computer beat the world chess champion. My mother-in-law says it’s not impressive until the computer can win an argument about whose fault the burnt roast is.
  10. The Spice Girls: My mother-in-law asked which Spice Girl she would be. I told her “Old Spice,” because she’s been around forever and gives me a rash.

The Full 1997 Archive (Extended List)

  1. The Teapot: She’s like a souvenir teapot from the Titanic—pretty to look at, but everything that comes out of it is ice cold.
  2. The Battery: Her Tamagotchi didn’t die from neglect; it committed suicide to escape the advice.
  3. The Propeller: My mother-in-law is the only person who could fall off the back of a sinking ship and hit the propeller… and break the propeller.
  4. The AOL Chat: She joined an AOL chat room for mothers. Within ten minutes, she was the moderator, the judge, and the jury.
  5. The Minivan (Part 2): She says the new minivan is too spacious. She prefers us to be “cramped enough to hear her sighing.”
  6. The Movie Theater: We went to see Men in Black. She asked if she could borrow a “Neuralyzer” to wipe my memory of her daughter’s first wedding.
  7. The Garden: She told me my roses look “depressed.” I told her they’re just leaning away from her.
  8. The Pager: I paged her “emergency services” by mistake. She showed up in four minutes with a list of things I’d done wrong since breakfast.
  9. The Fashion: She’s wearing platform shoes now. She says it helps her look down on me from a better angle.
  10. The Handbag: Her purse is like a black hole; everything goes in, but only “receipts for things you shouldn’t have bought” come out.
  11. The Internet: She thinks the “World Wide Web” is a plot by spiders to take over the living room.
  12. The Cleaning: She dusted the TV while I was watching the Super Bowl. I told her I couldn’t see the game. She said, “Good, it’ll save you the heartbreak.”
  13. The Wedding: She watches our wedding video and fast-forwards to the part where she’s crying. She says it’s the only “honest” part of the day.
  14. The Neighbor: Our neighbor got a new dog. My mother-in-law told him it was the wrong breed for the “vibe of the street.”
  15. The Airbag: My car has dual airbags. One in the dashboard, and one in the passenger seat whenever she visits.
  16. The Coffee: Her coffee is so strong it’s actually illegal in three states.
  17. The Library: She tried to return a book on “Mindfulness.” She said she couldn’t focus because the font was “arrogant.”
  18. The Mirror: She doesn’t use a mirror to put on lipstick; she uses the reflection in my terrified eyes.
  19. The Vacuum: She says our vacuum is too quiet. She likes one that sounds like a jet engine so she can yell over it.
  20. The Map: I gave her a globe. She pointed to the North Pole and said, “Finally, a place with a climate I can relate to.”
  21. The Computer (Part 2): She thinks “RAM” is what she does to the back of my car when I don’t park correctly.
  22. The Grocery Store: She spent an hour in the “10 items or less” lane explaining why her 40 items were all “technically connected.”
  23. The Alarm: I set my alarm for 6 AM. She woke me up at 5:45 to tell me I was going to be late.
  24. The Restaurant: She asked the waiter if the fish was “caught with a positive attitude.”
  25. The Rain: It started raining, and she complained that the raindrops weren’t “symmetrical.”
  26. The Diary: I found her diary. Entry #452: “Son-in-law wore the blue tie again. Will he never learn?”
  27. The Phone: She’s the only person who can make a “busy signal” sound like an insult.
  28. The Suitcase: Her suitcase has wheels now. She’s officially a “mobile disaster unit.”
  29. The Pizza: We ordered pizza. She complained that the pepperoni was “looking at her funny.”
  30. The Thermostat: She thinks 72 degrees is “the devil’s temperature.” She prefers it at a crisp 58.
  31. The Bird: My parrot learned to say “I told you so.” We know who’s been babysitting him.
  32. The Exercise: She says her favorite exercise is “jumping… to conclusions.”
  33. The Window: She complained that the window was too clean. “I can see the neighbors’ flaws too clearly now,” she said.
  34. The Ghost (Part 2): If a ghost haunted her house, it would end up doing her laundry and apologizing for the rattling chains.
  35. The Calculator: She used a calculator to prove that I’ve spent 40% of our marriage looking for the remote.
  36. The Hat: She bought a hat so big it has its own zip code.
  37. The Story: She told a story that lasted three hours. The punchline was that I’m lazy.
  38. The Guest Room: She says the guest room smells like “potential.” My potential to fail.
  39. The Car Trip: She spent the whole drive to the beach explaining why the ocean is “too salty.”
  40. The New Year: She’s already making her New Year’s resolutions for me.
  41. The Cake: She baked a cake that’s so hard, I’m using it to level the kitchen table.
  42. The Radio: She hates the “Modern Rock” station. She says it sounds like a “factory having a tantrum.”
  43. The Tea: She drinks her tea with so much sugar, it’s basically a dessert with a side of judgment.
  44. The Walk: She went for a walk and the local stray dogs formed a line behind her just to see who was in charge.
  45. The Postcard: She sent us a postcard from her vacation. It just said, “Having a terrible time. Wish you were here to see it.”
  46. The Camera: She hates digital cameras. “They’re too fast,” she says. “I need a camera that gives me time to prepare my ‘disappointed’ face.”
  47. The Furniture: She moved the sofa three inches to the left. She says the house “breathes better” now.
  48. The Lightbulb: How many mother-in-laws does it take to change a lightbulb? “Don’t worry about it, I’ll just sit here in the dark and wait for the end.”
  49. The Magazine: She reads Good Housekeeping and treats it like a list of my failures.
  50. The Door: She doesn’t knock; she just clears her throat until the wood splinters.
  51. The Watch: Her watch is always ten minutes fast. She says it’s the only way to stay ahead of my “inevitable lateness.”
  52. The Umbrella: She used her umbrella to point out a smudge on the ceiling.
  53. The Shoes: She bought “sensible” shoes. They’re sensible for kicking me under the table at dinner.
  54. The Secret: She told me a secret. It wasn’t a secret; it was just a list of my flaws she hadn’t mentioned yet.
  55. The Piano: She tried to play My Heart Will Go On. The piano went on strike.
  56. The Gift: I gave her a gift certificate for a spa. She asked if I was “trying to tell her she looks stressed.”
  57. The Birdhouse: She critiqued the birdhouse I built. Apparently, the “blue jays prefer a more colonial style.”
  58. The Final Word: My mother-in-law doesn’t need a microphone. Her silence is loud enough to be heard in the next county.
