37 Fourth of July Jokes: The 2005 “YouTube & Yellow Livestrong” Edition

In 2005, Independence Day was “synchronized.” If you weren’t wearing a yellow Livestrong wristband, were you even at the BBQ? It was the year YouTube was born (the first video was about elephants at the zoo!), and we all wondered why Tom Cruise was jumping on Oprah’s couch. It was a time of iPod Nanos, cargo pants so wide you could hide a full firework kit in them, and the belief that a Motorola Razr was the pinnacle of human achievement.

The 2005 Independence Top 10: “Sith & Sony PSP”

  1. The Revenge of the Sith BBQ: Why was the 2005 grill so intense? Because every Dad was acting like Obi-Wan, shouting at the sausages: “You were the chosen ones! You were supposed to bring balance to the diet, not leave it in grease!”
  2. The Birth of YouTube: Why did nobody look at the fireworks in 2005? Because they were too busy trying to film them on their digital cameras to see if this new “YouTube” site would actually let them upload a 240p video of a blurry explosion.
  3. The Tom Cruise Sofa Incident: Why was the host jumping on the furniture? Because he wanted to prove how much he loved the potato salad, inspired by Tom’s legendary performance on Oprah.
  4. The “Gold Digger” Era: Why was the 2005 Fourth so “Rich”? Because Kanye West and Jamie Foxx made everyone with a pair of knock-off oversized sunglasses feel like a millionaire while standing next to a cooler.
  5. The War of the Worlds Paranoia: Why did every weird noise cause a panic? Because after the Spielberg movie, we all believed giant tripods would emerge from under the lawn if we set off one bottle rocket too many.
  6. The iPod Nano Hype: Why was nobody dancing? Because they were all gathered around a device thinner than a slice of cheese, marveling at how it could hold 1,000 songs and still fit in a coin pocket.
  7. The Wedding Crashers Effect: Why were there so many strangers at the BBQ? Because Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson made “crashing” a party a national summer sport in 2005.
  8. The “We Belong Together” Loop: Why was the 4th so romantic? Because Mariah Carey owned the radio every 15 minutes, making even eating a messy rib in the sun feel like a scene from a music video.
  9. The Sony PSP Launch: Why were the kids sitting in the shade? Because they finally had a handheld console that looked like a spaceship and allowed them to play GTA during the parade.
  10. The Yellow Livestrong Band: Why did everyone have a yellow rubber band on their wrist? Because in 2005, it was the only way to signal you were “athletic,” even if your only cardio was running for a second helping of lemonade.

The Full 2005 Fourth of July Archive

  1. The Batman Begins Realness: Why did Dad wear a black towel on his back? Because Christian Bale proved Batman could be “gritty,” and Dad wanted to be the “Dark Knight of the Patio.”
  2. The “Hollaback Girl” Spelling Bee: Why did everyone know how to spell “bananas”? Because Gwen Stefani made sure America’s orthographic education happened on the dance floor.
  3. The Madagascar Move: Why did everyone “Move It, Move It”? Because the movie made us believe that even a zebra and a hippo could have a better dance routine than your Uncle.
  4. The “Since U Been Gone” Scream: Why did the neighbors call the police? Because Kelly Clarkson gave every teenager within a 5-mile radius the permission to scream their lungs out at the sky.
  5. The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Why was the dessert table so suspicious? Because Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka made a regular Hershey’s bar feel like a potential trap.
  6. The “Candy Shop” Context: Why was 50 Cent banned from the kids’ table? Because the adults finally listened to the lyrics and realized it wasn’t actually about a confectionery store.
  7. The Fantastic Four (2005): Why was the Uncle pretending to be on fire? Because he wanted to be the Human Torch, but he just ended up with singed eyebrows while lighting the charcoal.
  8. The “You’re Beautiful” James Blunt: Why did everyone get sad at sunset? Because James Blunt reminded us that we saw an angel on the subway, even though most of us were just stuck in Fourth of July traffic.
  9. The How I Met Your Mother Teasers: Why did people start wearing suits to the BBQ? Because Barney Stinson was already telling us to “Suit Up!” in the commercial breaks.
  10. The “Pon de Replay” Rihanna Debut: Why did the 4th have a Caribbean vibe? Because a young girl from Barbados told us to turn the music up, and nobody dared to say no.
  11. The The 40-Year-Old Virgin: Why was waxing a conversation topic? Because Steve Carell made shouting “Kelly Clarkson!” the universal signal for extreme physical pain.
  12. The MySpace Top 8 Drama: Why was the cousin not talking to her brother? Because he moved her out of his “Top 8” to make room for Tom, which in 2005 was a declaration of war.
  13. The Sin City Visuals: Why were the BBQ photos all black and white with one red element? Because everyone wanted their MySpace album to look like a Robert Rodriguez film.
  14. The “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” Emo Peak: Why was the 4th so “punk”? Because Fall Out Boy made wearing tight jeans and side-swept hair a patriotic duty.
  15. The Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Hype: Why were kids running around with sticks? Because they were practicing “Expelliarmus” on mosquitoes while waiting for the November movie release.
  16. The “Mr. Brightside” Longevity: Why was this song still playing? Because The Killers created a track that was fresh in 2005 and destined to be played at every BBQ until the end of time.
  17. The King Kong (2005) Remake: Why was the Uncle climbing the ladder? Because Peter Jackson reminded us that giant apes are cool, and the Uncle felt very “giant” after three beers.
  18. The Google Maps Launch: Why did nobody get lost? Because Google Maps finally replaced MapQuest, which used to tell people to “turn left into a lake” to get to the parade.
  19. The “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”: Why was the walk to the mailbox so moody? Because Green Day made everyone feel like a “Lonely Boy,” even when they were just going to get more napkins.
  20. The Dukes of Hazzard Remake: Why was everyone trying to jump into cars through the window? Because Jessica Simpson and denim “Daisy Dukes” were the only fashion inspiration that summer.
  21. The “Feel Good Inc.” Laugh: Why did the radio sound like a cartoon? Because the Gorillaz proved that animated monkeys were more popular than actual human musicians.
  22. The March of the Penguins: Why was everyone talking like Morgan Freeman? Because the documentary made “carrying a tray of meat to the table” feel like an epic struggle for survival.
  23. The Xbox 360 Announcement: Why were gamers saving their money? Because they knew their social life would officially end in November thanks to the “white box” from Microsoft.
  24. The “Don’t Phunk with My Heart”: Why were the Black Eyed Peas on every playlist? Because in 2005, you couldn’t eat a burger without Fergie singing in the background.
  25. The Sky High Ambitions: Why were kids jumping off swings? Because the movie convinced them their “Super Power” was “Resilience to falling into bushes.”
  26. The “Speed of Sound” Coldplay: Why did the sky feel higher? Because Chris Martin’s piano made the fireworks feel like they were exploding in slow motion.
  27. The 2005 Final Vibe: Why was it a “Breakthrough” 4th? Because we were halfway between the old world of flip phones and the new world of YouTube, and the internet was finally starting to feel like a playground.
