The Family BBQ Disaster

It was Fourth of July and my entire family was at our backyard BBQ. My father-in-law was grilling, wearing his “Kiss the Cook” apron, waving around a giant American flag.
My mother-in-law kept complaining, “The burgers are too dry, the corn is overcooked, and why is the potato salad warm? This is not how we did it in 1976!”
I finally looked at her and said, “You know, on this day in 1776 we declared independence from a tyrannical ruler who was constantly criticizing everything we did. Two hundred and fifty years later and I still can’t escape one.”
She gasped, “Are you comparing me to the King of England?!”
I replied, “No ma’am… I’m saying the British had it easier.”
