66 Mother-in-Law Jokes: The 1999 “Y2K Panic & Matrix” Edition

In 1999, everyone was hoarding canned goods and bottled water while “Party Like It’s 1999” played on every radio station. The world was deciding between the Red Pill and the Blue Pill, and the Y2K bug was the ultimate boogeyman. For the mother-in-law joke, this meant a golden age of jokes about her being the only thing more certain than a global computer crash.

The 1999 Top 10: The “End of the Century” Classics

  1. The Y2K Bug: Everyone is worried about computers crashing in 2000. I’m more worried about my mother-in-law staying past the New Year—at least the computers have an “Off” switch.
  2. The Matrix: I told my mother-in-law that according to The Matrix, our reality is just an illusion. She said, “Then your paycheck is the biggest illusion I’ve ever seen.”
  3. The Red Pill: I asked her if she’d take the Red Pill to see the truth or the Blue Pill to stay in a dream. She said, “I’ll take the pill that makes you stop talking.”
  4. The Nokia 3210: My mother-in-law got a Nokia 3210. She spent three hours playing Snake and complained that the snake had “poor leadership skills.”
  5. The Survivalist: She started hoarding supplies for the millennium. Not water or batteries—just extra stationary so she can keep writing me “constructive” letters if the power goes out.
  6. The Britney Spears: My mother-in-law is like the song …Baby One More Time. She hits me with a criticism, and then she does it one more time just for luck.
  7. The Sixth Sense: I watched The Sixth Sense with her. When the kid said, “I see dead people,” my mother-in-law whispered, “Lucky him, I just see a son-in-law who can’t fix a leaky faucet.”
  8. The Google (Part 2): She asked me to “Google” her name. When no results came up, she called the company to complain that their “encyclopedia was broken.”
  9. The Blair Witch: She went to see The Blair Witch Project. She wasn’t scared; she just spent the whole movie criticizing the teenagers for their poor camping equipment and lack of sweaters.
  10. The Millennium Dome: My mother-in-law is like the Millennium Dome—very expensive, takes up a lot of space, and nobody is quite sure what she’s for.

The Full 1999 Archive (Extended List)

  1. The Napster: I explained Napster to her. She said, “So people are stealing music? Finally, a hobby you’re actually qualified for.”
  2. The New Year’s Eve: She wants to spend the turn of the century at our house. She says she wants to be there “when the world ends, or at least when I finally lose my patience.”
  3. The Flat Screen: I bought a new flat-screen monitor. She said, “It’s so thin… like your chances of getting a promotion.”
  4. The Pokémon (Part 2): She thinks Pikachu is a “yellow demon” designed to distract me from my chores.
  5. The Laptop Case: She uses her laptop case as a footstool. She says it’s the most useful thing a computer has ever done.
  6. The E-mail: She discovered “Forwarding.” Now I get 15 e-mails a day about “The Meaning of Life” and “Why Your Mother-in-Law Is Always Right.”
  7. The Garden: She told me the birds in my garden are singing off-key.
  8. The Pager: She finally gave up her pager. She said it was “too subtle.”
  9. The Coffee: Her coffee is so strong it’s actually starting to develop its own personality—and it’s just as mean as she is.
  10. The Sitcom: She says Everybody Loves Raymond is a documentary about her own life, except “Raymond’s wife is much better at cleaning.”
  11. The Cleaning: She looked at my vacuum cleaner and asked if it was “on strike.”
  12. The Wedding Album: She offered to “edit” our wedding album to remove any photos where I look happy.
  13. The Neighbor: She told the neighbor that his Christmas lights were “unnecessarily loud.”
  14. The Airbag: She thinks the “Warning: Airbag” sticker on the sun visor is a personal greeting.
  15. The Internet Cafe: She went to an internet cafe and asked the waiter to “bring her a sandwich and a list of everyone’s passwords.”
  16. The Digital Camera: I showed her a digital photo. She said, “It’s okay, but it doesn’t capture the true disappointment in your eyes.”
  17. The Library: She asked the librarian for a book on “How to Rule the World in 10 Days.” It was in the “Business” section.
  18. The Mirror: She doesn’t use a mirror; she uses my soul to reflect her greatness.
  19. The Vacuum: She says our new vacuum has “no soul.” She prefers the one that screams.
  20. The Map: I bought her an electronic map. It started crying after she tried to argue with the “Estimated Time of Arrival.”
  21. The Chat Room: She entered a chat room and everyone left within thirty seconds. She calls it “winning.”
  22. The Supermarket: She tried to return a carton of eggs because they were “too egg-shaped.”
  23. The Alarm Clock: My new alarm clock mimics the sunrise. She just closes the curtains and tells me it’s “not morning until she says so.”
  24. The Restaurant: She asked the chef if the soup had been “vetted by a committee.”
  25. The Rain: She says the rain in 1999 feels “angstier” than it did in the 80s.
  26. The Diary: Her diary entry for today: “The son-in-law breathed again. Very distracting.”
  27. The Phone: She’s the only person who can make a dial tone sound like a sigh.
  28. The Suitcase: Her luggage is so heavy I’m pretty sure she’s packed her own furniture.
  29. The Pizza: She told the pizza guy that his crust was “lacking integrity.”
  30. The Thermostat: She says the house is so hot she saw a mirage in the dining room. I told her that was just my reflection in the window.
  31. The Bird: My parrot started saying “Are you wearing that?” He’s officially her apprentice.
  32. The Exercise: She says her favorite sport is “throwing… shade.”
  33. The Window: She spends so much time at the window, the local birds think she’s a statue of “Judgment.”
  34. The Ghost: She told a ghost to “get a life or at least put on a clean sheet.”
  35. The Calculator: She used a calculator to prove that my “unpaid debt of gratitude” to her has reached 7 figures.
  36. The Hat: Her New Year’s Eve hat has its own gravitational pull.
  37. The Story: She tells a story about her childhood that always somehow proves I’m doing my taxes wrong.
  38. The Guest Room: She says the guest room pillow is “arrogant.”
  39. The Car Trip: We drove to the city. She said the skyscrapers were “trying too hard.”
  40. The New Year: She’s staying awake until midnight just to make sure the world actually ends. “I want to be the one to say ‘I told you so’ to the entire planet,” she said.
  41. The Cake: She made a “Millennium Cake.” It’s so dense it’s warping the space-time continuum.
  42. The Radio: She hates “Boy Bands.” She says they look like they’ve never done a day’s yard work in their lives.
  43. The Tea: Her tea is so hot it’s technically a plasma.
  44. The Walk: When she walks through the park, even the statues look nervous.
  45. The Postcard: She sent a postcard from the mountains. It said: “I’m higher up than you. Literally and figuratively.”
  46. The Camera: She thinks digital zoom is “cheating.”
  47. The Furniture: She told the armchair it was “lacking a sense of purpose.”
  48. The Lightbulb: How many mother-in-laws does it take to change a lightbulb? “None, I’ve already adapted to the darkness… it matches my son-in-law’s future.”
  49. The Magazine: She reads Time magazine just to see if she’s been named “Person of the Century” yet.
  50. The Door: She doesn’t knock; she just vibrates at a frequency that makes the lock open.
  51. The Watch: She says her watch is the only thing in the house that works for its living.
  52. The Umbrella: She uses her umbrella to “poke” at my life choices.
  53. The Shoes: She bought “Millennium Shoes.” They look exactly like her 1974 shoes, but with more “judgmental” soles.
  54. The Secret: She told me a secret and then told me I wasn’t allowed to know it.
  55. The Piano: She plays The Final Countdown on the piano every time I walk into the room.
  56. The Final Word: She doesn’t just get the last word. She gets the rights to the movie deal.
