50 Travel Jokes: The 1999 “Party Like It’s the End of the World” Edition

In 1999, traveling felt like a race against the clock. We were checking our watches for the Y2K bug, wearing tiny sunglasses because of The Matrix, and trying to figure out if our “e-wallets” would survive the millennium. It was the year we all wondered: “Will the plane stay in the sky when the clock hits zero?”

The 1999 Top 10: The “Millennium Bug” Classics

  1. The Y2K Prep: Why did the traveler buy 500 paper maps? Because he was convinced that on January 1st, every GPS satellite would turn into a pumpkin and fall on his head.
  2. The Matrix Glitch: Why did the tourist keep staring at the black cat in the hotel lobby? He’d seen The Matrix three times on the flight and was waiting for the walls to start melting.
  3. The Napster Flight: Why was the teenager so quiet? He spent 48 hours before the trip downloading three songs on Napster and was savoring every low-quality kilobyte.
  4. The Star Wars Disappointment: Why was the family vacation to Tunisia ruined? Because they visited the Star Wars sets and realized Jar Jar Binks was waiting for them in every gift shop.
  5. The Bluetooth Debut: Why was the man talking to his sleeve? He had the first Bluetooth headset and everyone at the airport thought he was a secret agent having a mental breakdown.
  6. The Eiffel Tower Flash: Why was the photographer nervous? He heard the Eiffel Tower’s millennium lights would be so bright they’d overexpose every film roll in a 10-mile radius.
  7. The BlackBerry 850: Why was the businessman sweating? He had the first BlackBerry pager and realized that now his boss could ruin his vacation in real-time, even in the middle of the ocean.
  8. The Sixth Sense: Why did the tourist refuse to stay in the old hotel? Because he “saw dead people” in every hallway (or it was just the 2 AM jet lag and the creepy wallpaper).
  9. The Euro Launch: Why was the traveler confused in 11 countries? Because the Euro officially launched for “accounting,” and he spent three hours trying to pay for a bratwurst with a currency that didn’t physically exist yet.
  10. The Britney Red Jumpsuit: Why was security annoyed? Because every third passenger was wearing a red latex jumpsuit and trying to dance in the metal detector like they were “Oops… on Mars.”

The Full 1999 Travel Archive

  1. The Dial-Up Bill: Why did the dad faint after the vacation? He used the hotel phone to check his email and the “Long Distance Data Fee” cost more than the flights.
  2. The Millennium Dome: Why was the London tourist disappointed? He went to see the “future” at the Dome and found out the future was mostly just a very large, very empty tent.
  3. The Flat Screen TV: Why was the hotel guest amazed? The “Luxury Suite” had a 20-inch plasma screen that was 6 inches thick and cost $15,000.
  4. The Ricky Martin Fans: Why was the cruise so loud? Because Livin’ La Vida Loca was played every 15 minutes by law in every port of call.
  5. The USB Key: Why did the traveler lose his files? He bought the first “Thumb Drive” which held 8MB and lost it in the seat cushions before he even landed.
  6. The Fight Club Rule: Why was the passenger so quiet? Because the first rule of Flight Club is: You do not talk about the “mystery meat” meal.
  7. The Google Growth: Why was the traveler happy? Because Google finally added a “Search” button that actually found the hotel instead of a random fan page for kittens.
  8. The Cargo Pants Peak: Why did the man have a back problem? He was carrying a Discman, a pager, a Nokia, a PalmPilot, and a bag of trail mix all in one pair of pants.
  9. The Blair Witch Project: Why did the backpackers get lost? They tried to film their camping trip with a handheld camera and ended up scaring themselves to death over a pile of sticks.
  10. The Seatback Telephone: Why was the businessman bankrupt? He used the seatback phone to tell his wife he’d be late, and the 2-minute call cost $45.
  11. The Tripadvisor Start: Why did the hotel owner sweat? Because a “website” started letting people write that the “ocean view” was actually a view of a dumpster.
  12. The Pokémon Yellow: Why were the kids screaming? They finally got Pikachu to follow them on their Game Boy and refused to turn it off for “electronic interference” rules.
  13. The All Star Song: Why did the traveler feel like a hero? Because Smash Mouth told him he was an “All Star” every time he walked into a terminal.
  14. The Nokia 3210: Why was the phone so heavy? It didn’t have an antenna, but it had “Composer,” so the traveler spent 10 hours writing a 3-note ringtone of Mambo No. 5.
  15. The Digital Watch: Why was the man staring at his wrist? He was waiting for the “Millennium Countdown” timer to see if his watch would explode at midnight.
  16. The Austin Powers Sequel: Why was the customs agent “shagadelic”? Because everyone was saying “Oh, Behave!” while being searched for contraband.
  17. The Low-Cost Airline: Why did the passenger sit on his suitcase? Because the “Budget Airline” didn’t provide seats, just a suggestion of where to stand.
  18. The Laptop Modem: Why was the traveler in the bathroom? It was the only place with a phone jack he could “borrow” to dial into his 56k ISP.
  19. The South Park Movie: Why were parents covering their kids’ ears? Because they didn’t realize the cartoon movie was “Bigger, Longer & Uncut” until the first song started.
  20. The Baggy Jeans: Why did the traveler trip? Because his pants were so wide they got caught in the escalator of three different international airports.
  21. The Blue Morpho: Why did the tourist go to Costa Rica? Because the 1999 screensaver told him that “Tropical Paradise” looked exactly like a 2D butterfly.
  22. The MP3 Ripper: Why was the traveler frustrated? It took 4 hours to “rip” one CD into MP3s, and he had to leave for the airport in 20 minutes.
  23. The Airport Massage Chair: Why did the man look so pained? Because the 1999 version of “Massage” felt like being hit by a series of small, angry hammers.
  24. The Dreamcast Launch: Why was the hotel room so popular? Because one guy brought his Sega Dreamcast and the whole floor wanted to see “real water” in Sonic Adventure.
  25. The Cruel Intentions: Why were the teenagers acting so dramatic? Because they were listening to Bitter Sweet Symphony on repeat and pretending they were in a 90s drama.
  26. The Millennium Bug Buggy: Why did the traveler buy a bike? He was sure all car engines would stop working because they “forgot” how to count to 2000.
  27. The Sony AIBO: Why did the woman have a robot dog in her carry-on? Because she wanted a pet that didn’t need a “Pet Passport” or a bathroom break.
  28. The Duty Free Gin: Why did the man buy 4 liters? Because he thought if the world ended at Y2K, he might as well go out with a very large martini.
  29. The Internet Explorer 5: Why did the traveler cry? Because the browser crashed right as he was clicking “Confirm” on his once-in-a-lifetime trip.
  30. The American Pie: Why was the teenager staring at the “Apple Pie” in the Dutch bakery? Let’s just say he was a bit too influenced by the summer’s biggest comedy.
  31. The Tipping Point: Why did the traveler give a $20 tip? Because he was “Living for the Weekend” and the Slimboy Slim tracks made him feel like a big spender.
  32. The Airport Security: Why was it still easy? Because you could still carry a gallon of shampoo and a full-sized bottle of Gatorade through the gate.
  33. The Travel Voucher: Why was it useless? Because the company’s computer system was “Y2K Compliant,” but the employees still hadn’t learned how to use it.
  34. The Digital Photo Print: Why was the man at the kiosk? He was trying to print a digital photo for the first time and realized it looked like a Minecraft block.
  35. The Final Fantasy VIII: Why was the guy ignoring the Eiffel Tower? Because he was on Disc 3 and he had to defeat Ultimecia before the flight landed.
  36. The Blue Screen of Death: Why was the departure board blank? Because it was a Windows system and it decided to “Update” at 4 PM on a Friday.
  37. The Traveler’s Check: Why did the bank refuse it? Because they were already switching to “Digital Transactions” and thought the paper check was an antique from 1995.
  38. The Space Junk: Why were people looking up? Because they were waiting for the Mir space station to fall on them as part of the “Grand Finale” of the century.
  39. The Millennium Party: Why was the flight to Sydney so expensive? Because everyone wanted to be in the first time zone to see if the world actually “Reset” to 1900.
  40. The Champagne: Why was the traveler drinking at 11:59 PM? Because he realized that if the planes didn’t fall, he’d have to pay his credit card bill in January.
